Monday is for Remembering!

Hi Y’all!

At first glance you might think that the above photo is yesterdays, but in color.  If you look back you’ll see that it is a different picture of me.

Today I’m joining Alfie’s Blog, Luna Dogs Life and My Brown Newfies for some Memorial Day mischief…

My Humans look at Memorial Day differently than most.  In the south Memorial Day was not a holiday for many, many years.  It was considered a Yankee holiday.

In 1868 May 30 was proclaimed Decoration Day; it was the day to decorate the graves of soldiers.  May 30 was chosen because it was not the date of any particular battle.

After World War I, it became a holiday to honor, not just Civil War dead, but all soldiers lost in battle. Until that time most in the south honored their dead on different dates.

Many southern states still honor their Confederate war dead on different dates, depending on the state.

When my Humans were children there were still elders surviving who remembered growing up hearing tales of the “war over states rights”.  These elders refused to recognize Memorial Day as a holiday. It wasn’t until 1967 that the day was officially named Memorial Day.

So, for my Humans, this is the day that you visit the cemeteries and say prayers for those who have given their lives for our country.

Congress changed Memorial Day from May 30 to the last Monday in May in 1968 whey they passed the Uniform Holidays Act.

The National Moment of Remembrance Act asks every U.S. citizen to pause at 3pm local time for one minute in remembrance of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Y’all come back now.
