Fit Dog Friday

Hi Y’all!

P1350861

Last Friday I talked about hydration and how important it is for both your human and you.

With my heavy Chessie coat I don’t do well in the hot weather that starts in April and May and continues through October here at the shore.

My Humans had some business to take care of and stopped at this little waterfront place for lunch.  There were several dogs there with their owners, all short haired but suffering with the heat.

One little fellow was drinking water from a bowl.  No my Human only caught this Great Dane on her cell phone.

Just think twice before you take your dog with you on warm days.  Remember, we’re wearing coats we can’t remove.

The same goes for boating on sunny warm days.  Dark coated dogs heat up more quickly than those with light colored coats.  We can’t change into light colored clothing like you can.

Below I’m practicing my whistle sit.

Obedience practice is mentally stimulating and many exercises can be practiced indoors on really hot days.  Do weaves around chairs, practice some of the strengthening exercises Slim Doggy has shown us.  Try scent training and hide and seek games.

  1. We so agree Hawk. We have stupid people chucking the ball in our park on a hot day. Never understand them. Luckily we now have a working water fountain for human and dogs. Have a fabulous Friday.
    Best wishes Molly

  2. We go out super early and exercise in the hot months. We always have plenty of water bowls around too. Being low to the ground we get all the heat coming up from the ground below us too. There is a reason why we love winter so much, but summer is fun too if we are careful.

  3. We love air conditioning. Seriously though, we have to be reminded to come in and rest for a while because we get so excited to see everything when the summer months hit. When it gets really hot though, even we limit how much time we want outside.

  4. Such an important reminder Hawk. Folks think a dog can go wherever they go, but they do get hotter more easily and hot pavement can be tough on the paws! Nice whistle sit. Thanks for joining the Hop.

  5. Me and Stanley have been kind of hot lately. That's why when we go running our pawrents go extra early and we stop for drinks and to go through sprinklers and puddles. Good reminder to everybody!

    Your Pals,

  6. Great reminder as we head into the summer. Our long walks are usually first thing in the morning so the heat isn't that bad. But Veruca has her favorite stream bed that we always have to stop and get a drink from.

  7. Great article, Hawk! We are looking for a cool coat or vest to add to our outdoor gear this summer. Thankfully we live near the beach and get to go swimming to cool off. Florida is hot!

  8. Great post on an important subject. Very important to stay hydrated during these hot summer months. Also a great reminder, Hawk … Pups can't take off their coats and humans need to always remember that!
    Have a great weekend 🙂
